ANOMALY HOUSE

SCI-Arc | Design Studio | Fall 2018

Instructor : Ramiro Diaz-Granados

This project explores how the hierarchy of design sequence can affect to the space with the exact same elements. The design process began with a precedent study of Prada Aoyama. In the precedent building, the structural envelope regulates the floor plates, and the floor plates are puffed up at the edge as diamond tubes along with the pattern of the envelope.

In the process of changing scale of the project from seven-story commercial building to four story housing, these architectural elements also experienced the change of design sequence. In Anomaly House, the tubes which were the tertiary element in the precedent building are liberated into the primary element. By connecting different scales of diamond shapes from the grid pattern of the same structural envelope, four different tubes are created and intersected with each other, being a single family house. Since the mass is prioritized instead of the envelope, the tolerance between the mass and the envelope is loosened. In order to solve the problem of misalignment, the envelope is deviated from the mass, rather loosening the tolerance more. The space between folded envelope becomes short-term rent loft, having its own different system.
