Two Dimensional Room
Through multiple layers of acrylics and printed drawings, the depth among furniture, shadows, wallpaper and wall is emphasized.
The wallpaper’s design was started with the collage of William Morris’ wallpaper and the illustrations from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Different scales of hand-drawn roses and photographic plants are overlaid on the Morris’ hand-drawn wooden frame, blurring the boundary between fake and real. The concept of the room is further developed from the idea of blurred dimensionality, with the rotated wallpaper’s grid and off-scaled roses.
The hand-drawn Thonet furniture set overlaid on top of the wall paper then seems floating with its reflected shadow, due to the vague dimensional environment.
Three Dimensional Room
Following the work of Monica Sosnowska from the exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, we investigated her work and how it creates abstract variations of “true” architectural features and extrapolates them into geometries.
The shift from the recognizable figures of beams and floor plates to abstracted
forms will be done by converting mass to outlines, by delineating these familiar
forms and voiding all material implications. While maintaining recognizable features but voiding all functional and material implications, the fabricated three dimensional miniature room became where the architectural “parts” constructed as a “whole”.
